Deep within a sunlit forest, a little girl in a brilliant red velvet cape follows a winding path toward her grandmother's cottage. Carrying a basket filled with cake and a bottle of wine, Little Red Riding Hood wanders beneath towering trees, surrounded by wildflowers, moss-covered roots, and golden shafts of afternoon sunlight. Yet beside her walks a cunning wolf, whose deceptively gentle smile conceals a dangerous intention.
Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the artwork unfolds like an enchanted storybook in which several moments of the narrative coexist. Beyond the forest, a quaint cottage rests beneath three ancient oak trees, with a thick nut hedge bordering its garden. Through its softly illuminated window, another scene emerges: the wolf lies disguised beneath grandmother's nightcap, waiting in the curtained bed as Little Red Riding Hood approaches with growing suspicion.
The familiar exchange about grandmother's enormous ears, eyes, hands, and terrible mouth becomes the dramatic heart of the composition. Nearby, the brave huntsman arrives to rescue the girl and her grandmother from the sleeping wolf. The rescue is suggested through expressive movement and theatrical shadows rather than graphic violence, preserving the atmosphere of a traditional illustrated fairy tale.
A smaller, playful vignette recalls the tale's second encounter with a wolf. Perched upon the cottage roof, the creature waits impatiently while grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood prepare a clever trap with sausage water in a stone trough. This lighter episode brings humor and resourcefulness to the darker story, celebrating the courage and ingenuity of its heroines.
Restless ink hatching, irregular squiggly lines, and delicate crosshatched textures bring the forest, cottage, characters, and animals to life. Loose dirty-aquarelle washes of deep woodland green, warm crimson, golden yellow, earthy brown, and misty grey spread across rough cold-pressed paper. Splatter, scratching, blotting, and overspray lend the scene the tactile charm of a weathered, beautifully illustrated fairy-tale book.
Little Red Riding Hood: Secrets of the Enchanted Forest celebrates the timeless tension between innocence and deception, danger and courage, darkness and the comforting promise of a happy ending.
