Along a winding country road, a proud little rooster and a tidy hen embark on a wonderfully mischievous adventure in a miniature wooden cart with four bright red wheels. Four determined mice pull the curious vehicle through a sunlit landscape of rolling meadows, wildflowers, and rustic cottages. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale The Rooster and the Hen, the scene captures the playful absurdity and irresistible charm of traditional European folklore.
As the little cart rattles along, an increasingly unlikely collection of passengers joins the journey. A curious cat, a duck, an egg, a heavy millstone, a pin, and a needle become part of the extraordinary traveling company. The rooster proudly announces their destination—the boogeyman's house—while the hen sits beside him, apparently unconcerned by the strange companions gathering around them.
At the humble house, the travelers prepare an elaborate series of tricks. The mice shelter the cart in the barn, the rooster and hen settle among the rafters, and the cat curls up beside the hearth. The duck waits on the pump handle, the egg hides in a towel, the pin disappears into a chair cushion, the needle conceals itself in a pillow, and the millstone balances ominously above the entrance.
When the unsuspecting boogeyman returns, his home becomes a theatre of comic misfortune. Ashes fly, water splashes, an egg breaks, and the smallest household objects turn against their enormous victim. The sequence unfolds through lively, overlapping storybook vignettes, emphasizing slapstick surprise and mischievous ingenuity rather than graphic violence.
Chaotic ink hatching, playful squiggly lines, and irregular pen strokes give every animal and object an expressive personality. Loose dirty-aquarelle washes of warm ochre, dusty blue, muted meadow green, cream, and cheerful red flow across rough cold-pressed paper. Splatter, blotting, scratching, and overspray create the charmingly imperfect texture of a well-loved antique fairy-tale book.
The Merry Cart to the Boogeyman’s House celebrates the delightful nonsense of Grimm's storytelling—a world where mice pull carriages, household objects plot elaborate pranks, and even the smallest creatures can turn a frightening giant's world upside down.
