Death of Richard, Duke of York in 1460 during the War of the Roses. Richard, who became heir apparent after capturing the catatonic King Henry in battle, is ambushed near his castle by Lancastrian force led by Queen Margaret. Richard's youngest son and retainers are slaughtered. In Shakespeare's version, before Richard is hacked to death, Margaret places a paper crown on his head in mockery and to dry his tears cruelly offers a handkerchief soaked in his son's blood. Richard's older sons, the future Edward IV and Richard III, will avenge him.
