ArtistIn the center foreground is a young man dressed in ripped jeans and black hooded sweatshirt sitting indian style on a dark, empty beach at night. His head is bowed, looking downward with his black hair hanging down hiding his face. Behind him in the distance is a well-lit crowded, Jersey Shore boardwalk lined with carnival rides, video arcades, and hot dog booths. The composition is marked by depth with a sharp light vs. dark contrast between the foreground and background.
Inspired by the Smashing Pumpkins track "1979." A retrospective idealized depiction of brooding youth. A sense of alienation and rebellion that seems raw and powerful when lived; ridiculous and pointless ten years later; but poignant and oddly prescient in disillusioned middle age. That youthful sincerity, however naive, is a faint echo of what has gone out of an inauthentic present world.
