Poem No. 62 from the Japanese poetry collection Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (see https://jti.lib.virginia.edu/japanese/hyakunin/hyakua.html). Back story: Lover leaves early at night, before the rooster crows. If the rooster crows at night, it would trick the gate guards into opening the gates, thinking it was morning. In the repartee, the poet states that the guards would not be fooled by the rooster crowing at night. Still,I wonder: How did the lover get in the gates at night before the rooster crowed?
