ArtistHybrid 50% animal 50% plant: thorn bug (Umbonia crassicornis) x multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) Full width 16:9 illustration filling the entire image width of a thorn bug (Umbonia crassicornis) x multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) hybrid. The invasive hybrid is shown close up. It displays dozens of densely clustered thorns made of thorn bugs on its stems. The rose thicket is in bloom, with abundant, thick bunches of five-petaled white rose flowers. Between the flower clusters, decorative, tiny, dull, green leaves that are pinnately compound and have small, serrated leaflets peek out. The leaves sit on stems that are densely covered with long lines of thorn bugs instead of rose thorns. The thorn bugs perfectly mimic true thorns, but are thicker, and striated in green, brown and red. The thorn bugs have fully fused with the rose stems, feeding on the sap running through the stems. The flower clusters and leaves frame the thorn bugs on the rose stems, making for a very decorative, repetitively patterned ensemble. The plant hybrid fills the entire image, extending beyond the edges. The image is rendered in an appealing jumble of almost microscopically tiny, extremely intricate, elaborate, decorative patterns and scribbles. The entire image is rendered in very rich, vibrant, ultra-detailed colors in intense pen-and-colored-ink technique with high color contrast of pink-edged white, various shades of green, and reddish accents. The fully melded biological oddity is illustrated with painstaking precision in a detailed biology illustration style.
Those thorns are alive!
