An eighteenth-century legend erupts into a terrifying whirlwind of greed, restless spirits, and supernatural punishment. Inspired by the legend of the Bokkenrijders and Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen, the artwork captures the moment when a stately home becomes an inescapable prison, condemned to spin endlessly under the weight of its owner's insatiable greed.
At the center of the chaos stands Hugo, surrounded by a room that has seemingly lost its connection to gravity. Walls lean at impossible angles, wooden furniture slides across the floor, and doors and windows spiral around him. The entire interior twists into a dizzying vortex, its distorted architecture pulling the viewer into the nightmare.
Outside, ghostly Bokkenrijders gallop through the darkness, their concealed faces briefly illuminated by flashes of blood-red light. Smoke curls through shattered perspectives, shadows stretch across the walls, and distant glimpses of the Abbey of Postel evoke the place where Hugo's overwhelming desire first took hold. The surrounding countryside appears caught between historical reality and supernatural folklore.
Chaotic ink hatching, frantic squiggly lines, and irregular contours intensify the sensation of perpetual rotation. Dirty-aquarelle washes of deep brown, smoky grey, blood red, icy blue, and spectral gold collide across rough cold-pressed paper. Splatter, scratching, blotting, and overspray transform the composition into a storm of fractured architecture, spectral riders, and swirling smoke.
The Curse of the Spinning House becomes a darkly theatrical interpretation of folklore, where greed is no longer merely a human weakness but a force capable of overturning the physical world. The house spins, the riders return, and its tormented inhabitant discovers that the greatest prison may be the one created by his own desires.
