This robot would normally have no use for a printed volume, but perhaps it cannot access any of the library's electronic resources. Then again, its owner might have opted to install human characteristics into its programming, including curiosity and human-level cognition speeds, to make it more relatable and, well, companionable.
There is no single, overarching story-line connecting all twelve characters in this series together. However, some of the portraits' subjects MIGHT share a story line, particularly the first seven, some or all of whom could conceivably be part of a single community. In contrast to this are the last five (like this one), each of whom would almost certainly have their own story-line. Sadly, I don't have any of the story-lines fleshed out yet.
