ArtistLate evening at sunset. A Roman-style street with Roman-style houses on either side. Anthropomorphic ants walk on their hind legs down the sidewalks wearing tunics or togas. On the streets, carts pulled by beetles are steered by anthropomorphic ants that sit on the coach box and wear rough spun tunics and hold the reins with their front legs. Three anthropomorphic ants in tunics crouch on the roofs of different houses, their mandibles bite into the roof tiles. Enaid, an anthropomorphic European fire-bellied toad in a green dress with red floral pattern. Enaid holds a gnarled staff made of oakwood which has a glittering green emerald inset at the top. Enaid stands on one rooftop next to one of the anthropomorphic ants. Enaid looks very concerned.
Queen Formica's concerns are not unfounded. Every day more and more Antonesians fall prey to some kind of affliction. Enaid Longlife has personally traveled from the distant bogs where the School of Life is located to examine the victims. The sufferers show symptoms she has never heard of before. They seem perfectly fine during the day. They go about their business as usual and even interact with their friends and families as though nothing were amiss. Yet every evening, they climb onto the roofs of their houses and bite into the roof-tiles, refusing to move until the sunrise. They do not sleep, and it seems as if their mandibles cramped. The most bizarre symptom however is that none of the afflicted can remember what they do at night. Other than a little soreness in their mandibles, they claim to have nothing to complain about. Yet, as night after night they are robbed of refreshing sleep, the strain begins to show. Two have already collapsed from exhaustion. And fear is beginning to spread through the city. Who is affected? Is it contagious? How long until the first symptoms show?
But for Enaid Longlife two questions are foremost in her mind: What is it? And is it curable? As she examines the victims, she becomes more and more convinced that there is indeed evil magic at work. Someone is responsible for this. They must be apprehended, if this epidemic is to end.
