Is this Earth ? Probably. After all, how likely is it that
an exo-planetary colony could get big enough to run all of this ?

In the future, scrap metal reclamation will get really big,
once they figure out 3-D printing at the level of sub-molecular particles,
I.e., rearranging neutrons, protons, and electrons
so that something is changed into something else.
Metals have an abundance of sub-molecular particles, so
scrap metal would literally be worth its weight in gold.
