More about Toddy and the Glass That Remembered

Since they had left the old bear's small honey stand, the world around Toddy and Salam Andra had grown strangely still. Not empty, but attentive, as if the forest itself were listening to where their footsteps were leading them. And although the narrow path among the ferns seemed peaceful, Toddy had the feeling that something invisible was following them, not threatening, but present, like a thought that had not yet found a name. Deep in his pocket, he felt the faint pulse of the glass that the old bear had wordlessly left them just before they had departed, as if he, too, had understood that this strange vessel had long since chosen its own path. The rain had stopped in the meantime, but damp wisps of mist still hung between the ancient trees, and when they finally reached a small clearing, Salam Andra suddenly stopped. His gaze drifted calmly through the darkness, but Toddy immediately noticed the faint shimmer in the air around him, that barely perceptible glow that always appeared when something answered its true name. "Do you feel it too?" Toddy asked softly, even though he already knew the answer, and Salam Andra merely nodded slowly, without taking his eyes off the forest. Then the glass began to glow again. Not suddenly. Slowly. The amber light grew inside like a breath, calm and deep, until it filled the surroundings, and Toddy carefully pulled the glass from his pocket. Instantly, the air grew heavier. Even the sounds of the forest seemed to recede. No rustling. No call of a night bird. Only the distant dripping of water somewhere among the branches. Movements appeared within the glass. At first indistinct, like memories underwater, but then Toddy suddenly recognized his own small red boat lantern in it, even though it couldn't possibly be inside the glass, and behind it, a figure moved through silver mist, slowly, searching, as if trying to reach them from another time. Then the glass cracked. Not loudly. Just a soft sound, like thin ice in winter. A second crack appeared. Then a third. Toddy involuntarily held his breath, but Salam Andra immediately moved closer. His posture remained calm, but his eyes had changed. Alert.Serious. The amber light began to deepen, darken, and suddenly the inside of the glass seemed larger than it should be, as if a space had opened up within it that didn't belong to this world. "This remembers," Salam Andra said softly. "Not places. Those who passed by." No sooner had he spoken the words than images flickered through the light. Toddy saw the old river of his home village. The first letter he had ever delivered. The small wooden footbridge where he had slipped that day. Faces appeared, people and animals long gone, yet nothing about them seemed peaceful. The memories stared back at him, as if warning him. Then the light changed again.
