ArtistFin de siècle Symbolist painting in the style of Gustave Moreau and Gustav Klimt's golden period, oil and gold leaf on panel, flat ornamental gold mosaic patterns of spirals, eyes and rectangles merging with finely modeled realistic faces and hands, jewel encrustations, palette of burnished gold, deep black, crimson, ivory and touches of emerald. An inverted Pietà set against a shimmering gold Byzantine background. An adult woman with long dark hair kneels, her robe dissolving into an ivory and gold mosaic of spirals and white lilies, and cradles in her lap a beautiful pale young man whose black robe is patterned with dark geometric rectangles and tiny gold skulls, his body limp like a corpse, his lips pressed to her open wrist as he drinks from her. Her eyes are closed with a serene, ecstatic, devoted expression like a martyred saint, a delicate gold halo behind her head; behind his head a halo of tarnished black metal, broken. Around her neck a braided rope of gold and white silk, ornamented like a jewel, marking her as a willing offering. A single crimson thread flows from her wrist and becomes a cascade of red rubies and rose petals spilling across the gold, symbolic of her offered life, no gore. Allegorical details woven into the ornament: an empty jeweled birdcage with its door open hanging above them, an ornate mirror at his side reflecting only black, a distant row of pale tombstones with wilted lilies glimpsed through a gap in the gold, a dagger lying across a shattered white mask with her features, the pieces apart and the blade unable to join them, a black heart of obsidian cracked into fragments, set like a broken gem in the mosaic. In a dark pool at her feet her reflection has eyes wide open and weeping. White moths and black poppies float in the ornamental field. Sensual yet sacred, melancholic and decadent atmosphere. Small signature in gold capital letters in the lower right corner: "Milo 308º 2026 CE".
This image is inspired by “Black Heart”, a song by Utsu-P sung by Hatsune Miku. Beneath its heavy metal surface I hear the story of a love that tries to save someone who cannot be saved.
He is a lost soul, a living dead. He has sold his soul, buried everyone he loved, and wanders alone looking for a home he will never find. She sees all of this, and she chooses to stay. If he is dying of thirst, she will give him her own life. This is not blind love: it is love that closes its eyes on purpose.
I painted it as an inverted Pietà. She holds him in her lap like a mother holding her dead son, but here it is the dead one who feeds on the living. Her face is serene and ecstatic, like a martyred saint in a golden icon, while his halo is broken and tarnished. The gold that surrounds them is seductive, almost sacred, because that is how he looks to her: beautiful, even while he destroys her.
The braided rope of gold and silk around her neck is a jewel and a noose at the same time; she wears it willingly, as an offering. Her blood does not fall as blood but as rubies and rose petals, because to her it is a gift, not a wound. Above them hangs an empty jeweled cage with its door open: the prison he never truly left. Beside him, a mirror that reflects nothing, because he no longer recognizes himself. Far away, pale tombstones and wilted lilies remember the friends he left under the ground.
The heart of the image is at her feet. A dagger lies across a shattered mask with her face, and the blade cannot join the pieces back together. In the song she knows it: the knife that hurts her will never be what holds her together. The black heart of obsidian, cracked like a broken gem, says the same. And in the dark pool below, her reflection has its eyes wide open and weeping. Part of her has always seen the truth.
Sacrifice is not redemption. You cannot bring the dead back to life by giving them your blood; you can only follow them into the dark.
