In the old alchemical tradition, turning lead into gold was never the true goal. The furnace, the crucible and the long patient fire were mirrors: by purifying matter, the alchemist was meant to purify himself. The ancient motto VITRIOL says it plainly: visit the interior of the earth, and by rectifying, you will find the hidden stone. The earth to be explored was always the soul.
This pentaptych tells the story of an alchemist who read the motto literally.
In the first panel he makes his vow, young and balanced, one hand on the lead and one on his heart, while behind him the line of his life beats warm and alive.
In the second he forces the matter into the blackening, the stage of death and decay that every seeker must first face within himself. He turns his back to the mirror, where the darkness he refuses to see begins to spread across his own reflection.
In the third, the purification becomes sterile. His laboratory grows immaculate while he wastes away, and in a sealed flask a tiny figure with his own face, his forgotten soul, presses its hands against the glass.
In the fourth, the gold arrives, but it gives no light. It climbs from his hands toward his face, and through its cracks the raw lead he never transformed seeps out. The sacred motto crumbles above the dying fire.
In the fifth, the Great Work is complete. He holds the perfect red stone in triumph, his body almost entirely golden, his chest an empty furnace full of ash. Only the mirror and the floor tell the truth: the figure they reflect is made of lead. The line that once beat with life runs flat and straight into darkness.
The horror here has no monster. It comes from success itself, from the quiet moment when we confuse what we obtain with who we become, and polish everything around us while the one thing that needed transforming is left untouched.
