ArtistNeo-Baroque oil painting, intensely dramatic portrait of a woman dancing alone in a vast, decaying Gothic cathedral haunted by an ancient cosmic presence. A Mediterranean woman in her thirties with an asymmetrical layered cut of very wavy snow white hair, just past her chin, lashing in a violent gust of wind; two soft, organic white cat ears rise from her hair, flattened back by the movement. A long, thick, very fluffy white cat tail with wavy fur emerges from the back of her gown and is fully visible, sweeping in a wide, powerful arc beside her body like a ribbon of white light. She is caught at the climax of a fierce dance: balanced on the ball of one foot, the other leg extended high behind her, torso arched deeply backward, one arm flung upward with straining fingers, the other thrust low behind her like a wing; head thrown back, eyes closed, brows drawn, lips parted in a silent cry of ecstatic defiance, as if her dance alone held back something immense. Her feet are without shoes, and where her foot touches the flooded floor black water bursts upward in a crown of glittering droplets. She wears a gown of black silk and midnight tulle with iridescent hints of violet and oil-slick green, its torn hem and trailing panels whipped by the wind into spirals without hiding the tail, the bodice embroidered with faint silver scales. The cathedral is monumental and wrong: impossibly tall vaults curving like the ribs of a leviathan, columns encrusted with barnacles, coral and seaweed, tracery twisting into root-like forms, arches bending in non-Euclidean directions. From the cornices lean original gargoyles inspired by abyssal creatures, with anglerfish jaws full of needle teeth, glowing lures, membranous fins and long human-like fingers gripping the stone, their blind white eyes turned toward her. Faceless saints line the nave, their features dissolved into coral and pale anemones. High above, the great rose window shatters outward in slow motion, sea-green and violet shards suspended like stars. Behind her, rising from the flooded nave, looms an immense, indistinct presence: a towering mass of pale translucent filaments flickering with bioluminescent points like distant constellations, its shape impossible to grasp. Guttering candles bend in the wind. On one stone block of the wall the name "Milo" is carved deep like a mason's mark; on another, in the same lettering, the date "307º 2026 CE". Extreme Caravaggesque chiaroscuro: a single violent shaft of eerie green light from the rose window strikes her, setting her hair, ears, tail, the droplets and the edges of her gown ablaze, while the cathedral and the presence sink into umber, indigo and abyssal black, cold reflections shimmering on the water. Rich, theatrical brushwork with thick impasto in hair, fur, fabric, spray and stone, delicate glazing on the face, a tactile, sculptural quality blending Baroque drama, Gothic grandeur and contemporary cosmic horror.
Orr’e throd, shagg n’ghft.
N’gha fhtagn, r’luh syha’h.
Y’hah, wgah’nagl, n’ghft.
Ia! Ia! Ph’nglui N’gha!
The soul trembles, the darkness dreams.
Beyond death, eternity lies hidden.
Something ancient awakens in the endless night.
Ia! Ia! Beyond the Threshold of Death!
