ArtistIt is winter frosty morning in the early medieval Viking settlement of Haithabu. The sun is just rising and its first rays are grazing the frozen landscape. A few ravens are circling above the village. In the foreground you can see a wooden tripod made of natural, straight, thick branches, in the middle of which a stone is hanging down attached to a thick cord. In the background you can see typical early medieval Viking longhouses, a few chickens, a lonely black and white cat sitting benetah the wooden tripod, as well as a peacefully sleeping Icelandic Sheepdog, another norwegian forest cat straying arround, but there is not a soul to be seen yet, peacefull romantic winter morning mood in ealry medieval scandinavian times. oil on canvas, oil paints, oil panting, painting, canvas, old masters, masterpiece
Early medieval Viking weather station from the 7th century.
With the help of a stone that is suspended freely from a rope under a wooden tripod, the Vikings were able to determine and describe various weather phenomena with great precision. The Viking weather station works as follows:
Dry stone = Sun
Hot stone = Heat wave
Wet stone = Rain
White stone = Snow
Stone in water = Storm surge
Invisible stone = Fog
Stone moving = Wind
Stone swinging violently = Storm
Stone fallen down = Earthquake
Red-hot stone = Volcanic eruption
Double stone = Too much mead & beer
Triple stone = Wrong mushrooms
No stone = THIEVES! Damn … to arms!
Stone hanging upwards = "RAGNARÖK", End of the world
