Prompt: This Old House
If you grew up in Philadelphia, there’s a good chance you lived in a row home. There are several types of row homes in the Kensington area. Here are a few examples. The two Story 1000 square foot home, the three-story 1200 square foot (Father, Son, and Holly Ghost, we called them), and a home I call the manager’s house. The manager’s house was still a three-bedroom, one-bath, but it was 1650 square feet, and some also had a lawn. The 100 Block of West Allegheny in my old neighborhood or examples of these types of homes.
Most of us probably lived in the two-story 1000-square-foot house. In my area, these homes were built in 1920 and my family bought one in about 1941. I came along in 1944, and our little house at 125 West Wishart Street was my home until I left in 1962 and took up residence with Uncle Sam
Prompt: "Spring has sprung," my grandfather, Pop, used to say. It was a time for celebration for him because he could go fishing again. Every April the 15th, the opening day for trout fishing, he would take my brother to catch his limit. I went once or twice but never could land any trout.
Prompt: Mercy Row continues the story in 1920 when the son of Charles Byrne becomes a rum runner and forms the K&A Irish Gang. By the 1930s, Jacob Byrne created one of the most formable organized crime gangs in the city.
Prompt: In early 2000 I found office space at Baltimore Row near Pine Street in the city of Atlanta. In many ways, I thought I had returned to my Philly Childhood. You see, the offices at Baltimore Row were in a row of three-story brick homes. These homes were built by a Baltimore contractor in 1885. I grew up in a row home in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. My childhood home was not as large or as decked out as the Baltimore Row homes must have been. I read somewhere that the only row homes in Atlanta (for many years) were designed for professors working at Georgia Tech. By the way, that area was the suburbs of Atlanta in 1885.
