This Old House
If you grew up in Philadelphia, there’s a good chance you lived in a row home. There are several types of row homes in the Kensington area. Here are a few examples. The two Story 1000 square foot home, the three-story 1200 square foot (Father, Son, and Holly Ghost, we called them), and a home I call the manager’s house. The manager’s house was still a three-bedroom, one-bath, but it was 1650 square feet, and some also had a lawn. The 100 Block of West Allegheny in my old neighborhood or examples of these types of homes.
Most of us probably lived in the two-story 1000-square-foot house. In my area, these homes were built in 1920 and my family bought one in about 1941. I came along in 1944, and our little house at 125 West Wishart Street was my home until I left in 1962 and took up residence with Uncle Sam
