The second part of this novel takes place when the communist was taking over Vietnam. Gerard had, for years, helped an orphanage in Saigon and the children and nuns that ran the organization, could not find a way out of the country. Gerard, using his connections in the aircraft industry, attempts a rescue mission while North Vietnam soldiers and Vietcong invade Saigon.
