Prompt: In times of climate change, wild horses have left dried-up grasslands to feed on kelp mats in the ocean. It this fast-forward imaginary evolution of horses, the aquatic equine species has developed modified, shortened and flattened legs to swim better. The aquatic horses’ tails have also flattened, and the tail hair has fused into a type of rudimentary flipper or rudder. The horses’ fur has become coarse, with short, oily, and insulating hair, and camouflage color under water. The horses’ bodies have streamlined through blubber accumulation, allowing the animals to move through cold water for long periods. The horses have acquired the ability to pinch shut their nostrils and flatten and close their smaller ears, so they can dive for long periods to graze under water. The horses move onto the land from time to time to rest, and in the breeding season they gather on beaches or flat areas to mate and to give birth. Prompt: Alaskan king crabs have left the ocean and have found a new habitat in the temperate rainforests of coastal Washington and Oregon North. The crabs shelter among the lush, thick blankets of green mosses and ferns carpeting the ground below the dense canopy of towering Sitka spruces, Douglas firs, Western red cedars, and deciduous trees. The huge, dark red-burgundy Alaskan king crabs peer out from the vegetation, waiting for prey to come along – banana slugs, snails, salamanders, and even snakes. The crabs hold their claws up, ready to snatch prey. The Alaskan king crabs have adapted to life in the rainforest and have become a new invasive species in times of climate change. Prompt: In times of climate change, moose open up new habitats under water. Already today, moose have specialized nose flaps that can seal their noses while they dive up to 6 meters under water to graze on nutrient-rich aquatic plants. Moose often seek out water to escape dense, relentless swarms of mosquitoes that can drain up to half a liter of blood daily from a moose. In a conceivable further adaptation, the moose grow webs between their two-toed hooves, with the two toes lengthening to streamline underwater movement. The web stretches between the two toes. The moose’s coats become slicker and seal in warmth and air, like the fur of beavers. Slowly, the moose begin to prefer underwater foraging to terrestrial feeding. Moreover, the moose face only few predators under water. The moose begin to come on land only to bear their young. While they still need to surface to breathe, like other aquatic mammals, their lifestyle is gradually adapting to a life fully under water. Prompt: In times of climate change, octopuses have begun to go terrestrial. Already today, some species, like the Abdopus aculeatus, regularly leave the water to hunt for crabs at low tide. To spend longer times on land and tap new food sources, octopuses have started to develop a fairly thick waxy body coating that helps them retain moisture. Also, they have begun to evolve a cartilage-based internal framework that serves as a rudimentary skeleton. The protective coating and the internal scaffolding come at the cost of octopuses amazing ability to change colors in milliseconds by means of specialized skin cells called chromatophores. The chromatophores have atrophied and have been largely replaced by a very intricate green-brown camouflage pattern of octopuses’ thicker skin. The octopuses have retained full flexibility of their limbs and are able to move very nimbly and quickly to escape and hide from predators. Their new feeding grounds are grasslands, where they forage for worms, insects, frogs, salamanders, and the odd small mammal. The image shows three octopuses moving along a grassy meadow in search of food, under cover of a cloudy day, which helps prevent their skin from dessicating. Prompt: In times of climate change, limpets are well-positioned to go terrestrial as their ocean food sources dwindle and sea levels rise. Limpets first invade the newly flooded coastal estuaries and forests. Limpets’ hard shells seal in moisture and give limpets the time over generations to develop the capacity to process air for oxygen. Terrestrial limpets have acquired the capacity to crawl slowly over decaying matter, feeding as they go. Limpets have made it to higher ground, where they slowly crawl up rocks and stones covered in lichen, a new food source for the limpets. The image is a close-up of limpets attached to higher-ground stones surrounded by grass mats and wildflowers. The stones are weathered and covered with gray-green and yellow-green lichen. The limpets have developed the colors of the lichen-covered rocks, with gray, tan, yellow, and olive green bands concentrically arranged around their keyholes, with darker and lighter rays of the same colors along radial ridges radiating from the keyholes. The limpets thus have fairly good camouflage. The new food sources, the protective carapaces, and the ability to breathe air and move along terrestrial surfaces have allowed limpets to grow to sizes topping out at 30 centimeters (12 inches). Prompt: In times of climate change, walking batfish have escaped the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which has poisoned their habitat and killed off their plankton food supply. The bottom-dwelling batfish have left the Gulf to become terrestrial and feed on large masses of shoreside algae slicks that form thick, dark brown blankets on beaches. The batfish have evolved to retain water subcutaneously to keep them from drying out, and have developed the ability to derive oxygen from the air though their thickened skins. Moreover, their pectoral fins have lengthened, hardened, and gained mobility, enabling the batfish to “walk” on these fins. Considering that animals first left the oceans for dry land nearly 400 million years ago, at the end of the Devonian period, this speeded-up evolution scenario is absolutely believable. The image is a close-up of several batfish scavenging among thick algae mats on shore. The style is a biological illustration with scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: In times of climate change, feather duster worms have adapted to a terrestrial habitat. For these filter feeders to successfully colonize land, the feather duster worms have increased the sticky mucus and grooves of their tentacles to trap food particles from the air. Moreover, the mucus contains poisons to immediately paralyze insects that come into contact with the worms’ fans. The feather duster worms’ outer cuticle has hardened by increasing calcium deposits to effectively form an exoskeleton. Also, the worms have developed a vascularized skin, like their distant relatives, the earthworms, to breathe oxygen from damp air while preventing water loss. The giant feather duster worms have developed a camouflage coloring for the swampland they inhabit, with flecks of yellows, greens, and browns in their large fans that sway in the breeze to capture airborne food. The new swampland food sources and their toxic mucus to fend off predators have allowed the feather duster worms to grow to twice the size they had as ocean dwellers. The image is a close-up of several feather duster worms attached to a rotting log in the swampland, their fans fully open. Prompt: In times of climate change, lobsters have adapted to a terrestrial habitat. They have converted their gills into lung-like, vascularized branchiostegal lungs, allowing them to forage for small prey in a moist woodland environment. The lobsters are well protected by their carapace, whose colors blend in perfectly with the greens and browns of the forest floor. They have no natural enemies and have invaded the woodland habitat, crowding out more vulnerable small mammals. The rich food sources of the woodland have allowed the lobsters to grow to twice the size they had as ocean dwellers. The image is a close-up of several lobsters foraging. Prompt: In times of climate change, sea fans have adapted to terrestrial life, attaching themselves to growing on rocky outcrops reaching into the air. The sea fans have formed colonies where the air is thick with insects. The sea fans are a colonial coral with several main branches and a highly intricate latticework linking smaller branches. The soft polyps on the skeleton, which is composed of calcite and gorgonin, are brilliantly red, with older polyps fading into pink. The fans are orientated at right angles to the wind current; each sea fan grows as a single, flat, plane layer like nets directly facing wind currents, and letting air travel through the openings in the network while trapping insects and other particles that fly against the polyps. The sticky polyps on the sea fans slowly digest the food particles. The ground around the sea fans is littered with tiny particles, the residues of the digested insects’ exoskeletons. The sea fans have adapted to life on land and are invading drier ground as a new destructive, invasive species. Prompt: 6. In times of climate change, eels have left the oceans to exploit new food sources. They have migrated from the ocean to mangrove estuaries into wetlands, where they navigate by trapping moisture in their gill chambers, breathing through their thick skin, and moving at night when it is cool. The move through the moist fields at night to eat terrestrial worms and slugs, amphibians, crabs, and small rodents. The eels have adapted to life on land and are invading drier pastures as a new destructive, invasive species. Prompt: In times of climate change, entire colonies of predatory sea urchins have left overgrazed oceans and tidal pools, where they left behind urchin barrens, in search of new food sources. They have migrated up the rocky shores to steep cliffs and beyond to rocky plains, where they have attached themselves to rocks and rubble in large swarms. The voracious sea urchins have acquired a degree of mobility now, and feed on small rodents, insects and nesting birds on the wind-swept, stony plains. The sea urchins have retained their dark purple color and have kept their dozens of extremely long, sharp, gray-white spines, protecting them from any natural enemies. The sea urchins have adapted to life on the rocky coastal and inland plains and have become a new destructive, invasive species. Prompt: Huge patches of large, 20-centimeter-long, brown and white gooseneck barnacles have populated the walls of stone seashore houses, all but obliterating the walls and windowsills. The gooseneck barnacles have left the ocean and have adapted to living on land, attaching themselves to building walls, stone fences, facades and concrete structures. The barnacles feed on any insects or birds flying by or landing on a barnacle. The barnacles represent a new invasive species in times of climate change. Prompt: Dozens of living, mature conch shells have left the sea and have traveled all the way to Alpine meadows, where they are creeping along the meadow with their big, red, muscular foot, and looking around with their distinct, stalked eyes. The hungry conches are devouring and annihilating the flower-filled meadow vegetation, leaving the soil bare in their path. The conch shells are a new invasive species in times of climate change. The style is a biological illustration with scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: A dozen starfish are creeping along the forest floor. They represent a new invasive species in times of climate change. The five-armed, red, large starfish are vegetation destroyers, eating all the forest floor vegetation they come across and leaving behind barren soil.
