Intercessory prayer is a powerful tool that Christians have been given to lift up others in prayer. An intercessor is someone who stands in the gap for others, praying on their behalf. As we reflect on the role of an intercessor and the importance of praying at night, we can learn valuable lessons about our prayer life.
First, intercessors remind us of the importance of praying for others. In Philippians 2:3-4, we are encouraged to "do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." As we pray for others, we are putting their needs and concerns before our own, showing them love and compassion.
Second, praying at night reminds us of the importance of setting aside dedicated time for prayer. In Psalm 63:6, David writes, "When I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night." Nighttime can be a peaceful and quiet time to reflect on God's goodness, pray for others, and seek his guidance for the day ahead. By setting aside time for prayer, we are acknowledging our dependence on God and our need for his wisdom and guidance.
Finally, intercessors remind us of the power of prayer. In James 5:16, we are told, "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." As we lift up others in prayer, we are partnering with God to bring about his will in their lives. We may never know the impact of our prayers, but we can trust that God is at work in the lives of those we pray for.
As we reflect on the role of an intercessor and the importance of praying at night, may we be reminded of the power of prayer and the importance of lifting up others in prayer.
