The Cottage of the Vanished Wizard Chapter 13 – The Library Beneath the Last Ending Part 2 – The Shelves That Dreamed in Silence
The staircase descended far deeper than anyone had expected. Each broad step was carved from dark polished wood, yet beneath the surface flowed delicate veins of golden light that pulsed with the same slow heartbeat Ticko had heard long before anyone else. The Keeper walked at the front, carrying the great unopened book carefully against his chest. Behind him came Biblior and Memoris, both unusually silent. Mara and Linora followed together, the tiny crystal bottle glowing warmly between them, while Ticko repeatedly checked that the little silver key still rested safely inside his side compartment. Klemmi noticed him doing it once again and smiled. "You know, keys usually stay where you leave them." Ticko looked offended. "That may be true for ordinary keys. Magical ones have opinions." Even the enchanted broom nodded wisely beneath his black top hat. "Quite correct. I once knew a wardrobe that kept moving its own key simply because it disliked visitors." Linora laughed. "Did anyone ever prove that?" "Certainly not," replied the broom. "The wardrobe always locked itself before questioning began." Warm laughter accompanied them for a few more steps before the sound slowly faded into the growing silence below. The ticking clocks above disappeared completely, replaced by the gentle whisper of countless turning pages somewhere deep beneath the cottage. No breeze stirred the air, yet the endless rustling continued without pause, as though invisible readers were searching through thousands of forgotten stories at the same time. Mara gently touched the polished wall beside her. At once, glowing golden letters appeared beneath her fingertips. They formed a single sentence before dissolving back into the wood. She could not read the language, yet she somehow understood its feeling. Someone had once stood here, uncertain whether to continue or turn back. "The walls remember," she whispered. Biblior shook his head gently. "Not memories." Memoris studied the glowing traces with quiet fascination. "Choices," he said. "Every traveler leaves one behind." Klemmi glanced uneasily along the endless staircase. "How many reached the end?" The Keeper answered without turning around. "Fewer than began the journey." Nobody asked another question. After what felt like hours, the staircase finally opened into an enormous hall unlike anything any of them had ever imagined. Endless bookshelves stretched through a golden mist so vast that neither walls nor ceiling could be seen. Some shelves stood firmly upon the floor, while others drifted silently through the air. Narrow bridges connected distant galleries, and elegant wooden ladders climbed from shelf to shelf entirely on their own, pausing now and then as if searching for a particular destination.
