ArtistSunrise viewed from an apartment balcony. 16:9 full width view of a hot summer sunrise from a tiny apartment balcony, rendered in a New Yorker illustration style, with loose lines and a playful use of color. A cute ceramic coffee cup and a plate with two plump croissants are on the little red folding table in the foreground. The balcony overlooks a tired, green courtyard area loosely enclosed by several high-rise apartment buildings, all with identical small balconies. The sun is rising over the horizon as seen through one of the gaps between the high-rises. The rising pink-orange sun illuminates the coffee cup and croissants from the back, giving them a shiny, orange-pink outline. The high-rises to the left and right of the sunrise are still immersed in shadow, and the windows and balconies are illustrated in shades of gray, except for a few apartments where the dim, yellow lights have already been switched on. The columns of sky above the rising sun is a riot of pink, yellow and orange. The edge of the balcony behind the little red folding table with its coffee cup and plate of croissants is lined with red-flowered geraniums. The line of geraniums creates the illusion of the sun rising over a meadow filled with blooming geraniums – if only the many other high-rise apartments were not looming in the background. The illustration conveys a false sense of coziness and solitude. Loosely based on the styles of Wesley Allsbrook, Alëna Skarina, and Chris Kim of the New Yorker.
