Right now, because of the Ditwah cyclone, more than 607 people have died in Sri Lanka.
Over 214 people are still missing.
Just last month (in November), we experienced a terrible disaster. The Ditwah cyclone hit Sri Lanka very badly. Many landslides, floods, destroyed homes, and heartbreaking losses happened across the country. Even though the cyclone is over now, so many people have lost their lives, their partners, children, homes, land-everything.
Many countries helped Sri Lanka during this difficult time. Thank you so much to all of them.
My experience:
My family and I were trapped inside our home. The rain and extremely powerful winds hit our area nonstop. trees fell everywhere, and our home is surrounded by trees. One coconut tree bent toward our roof. In that moment, my parents were terrified. If that tree had fallen, it would have destroyed our entire house and because we were inside, we probably would have died.
We couldn’t go anywhere because of the heavy wind and rain. The roads were blocked by fallen trees, and our home road was flooded. We were trapped inside for three days.
After the storm, everyone in the neighborhood helped to remove the fallen trees and clear the roads. We had no electricity for six days, living in complete darkness. Fortunately, the coconut tree didn’t fall. I think we were lucky. During the cyclone, we even placed rocks around its roots to keep it steady, and maybe that helped it stay up.
After the cyclone, people helped each other cleaning homes, repairing damage, sharing food, supporting families. There was so much love and kindness everywhere. And again, many countries also supported Sri Lanka.
It was a truly hellish experience. Now everyone is trying to rebuild their lives. Some families are still missing, and in some places, entire homes have disappeared only rocks and mud remain.
There is much more I could write, but I will stop here for now.
Please stay safe, everyone. Thailand and Indonesia are faced cyclones. I feel sad for them, and I wish them a full recovery.
Thanks
