**Sally Mann (b. 1951)
- USA
Sally Mann’s work is steeped in the American South: oak trees, riverbanks, old homesteads, and the slow language of family and memory. When Mann turns to images of male bodies whether boys, grown men, or aging relatives she does so with a tenderness that interrogates innocence, mortality, and the weight of place.
Her photographs look handmade; they often show tactile marks, wet-plate imperfections, and smoky edges that give the subject an almost painterly aura. Mann’s male subjects are part of a landscape of memory where the body and the terrain reflect one another’s histories.
The viewer is asked to feel time and dust and quiet domestic myth as much as to see a single body.
