More about Ogura Hyakunin Isshu No. 54 - Gidō Sanshi no Haha

Poem No. 54 from the Japanese poetry collection Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (see https://jti.lib.virginia.edu/japanese/hyakunin/hyakua.html). The groom was supposed to be transparent, symbolizing the plight of brides during the Heian Period: "Noblemen at the time often married multiple wives, and such women were often living apart from their husbands ...this can lead to many years of isolation and loneliness if the husband neglects her." (https://100poets.com/2012/02/11/the-joys-of-marriage-poem-number-54/). So a transparent groom would perfectly symbolize the chance that the husband would neglect his wife.
