More about Rooted in History, Branches of Promise

In this dream of the tree with roots representing the Old Testament and branches representing the New Testament, we see a symbol of the unity and continuity of God's message throughout the Bible. Just as the roots of a tree provide the foundation and support for the branches to grow and flourish, the Old Testament provides the foundation and support for the teachings of the New Testament.

The Old Testament is often seen as a separate and distinct part of the Bible, containing stories and teachings that may seem unfamiliar or irrelevant to modern readers. However, when we look more closely, we find that the Old Testament is full of foreshadowing and prophecy that point towards the coming of Jesus and the message of the New Testament. The stories of Adam and Eve, Noah and the flood, and Moses and the Ten Commandments all contain themes and symbols that are echoed throughout the New Testament, such as salvation, redemption, and grace.

In fact, Jesus himself often referred to the Old Testament scriptures, using them to explain his teachings and to reveal the plan of God. When he spoke to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus after his resurrection, he explained how the scriptures had foretold his coming and his death and resurrection. In Luke 24:27, it says, "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."

The unity and continuity of God's message throughout the Bible is a testament to the faithfulness and consistency of God's character. From the creation of the world to the redemption of humanity, God's plan has been unfolding throughout history, and the Bible is the story of that plan. As we read and study the Bible, let us remember that the Old Testament is not separate from the New, but rather a vital part of the same message of love and redemption that God has been communicating to us since the beginning of time.
