I wonder if Lao-zi's departure from the Zhou court, his journey west on a water buffalo, and especially his 'Crossing the Border' were meant to imply that he had become immortal. On the other hand, 'Crossing the Border' sounds like a euphemism for death.
The bump on Lao-zi's head represents the transcendence of his powers of understanding.
