"Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." (Matthew 19:21)
These were the words that transformed the life of Francis Bernardone. Born into wealth, Francis encountered the living Christ and was compelled to radically reorient his life. Shedding his fine garments, he donned the simple brown robe of a beggar, choosing to live a life of absolute poverty, chastity, and obedience. Soon, others were captivated by Francis' radical discipleship, flocking to join his growing community of Franciscan brothers.
What was it about Francis and his followers that so powerfully drew people in? It was the embodied witness of their lives - a living testimony to the truth that true treasure is found not in the things of this world, but in wholeheartedly pursuing Christ. The Franciscans' unwavering commitment to simplicity, service, and surrender to God's will became a living parable, revealing the freedom and joy that comes from unencumbered devotion.
May we be inspired by the legacy of St. Francis and his brothers. Let us courageously respond to Christ's call, surrendering our lives, possessions, and ambitions to His service. For in losing ourselves, we will find the true riches of the Kingdom - an eternal treasure that can never be taken away.
