George Washington standing vigil in a New Jersey wood during a moment of gloom: perhaps during the retreat from New York when failure and self-doubt threatened to consume him, or in camp during the winters of 1777 or 1780 when his army was sick, starving, and freezing to death and he could do nothing for them. With stoic eloquence the set jaw and thousand yard stare convey the weight of command, country, and cause under which he staggers. These moments of fleeting despair are his alone. The ragged boys he commands see only his erect figure and determined gaze. They know he will outlast the enemy--even when he doesn't.
