Based on a true story. Charming, popular and infamously corrupt mayor of Prohibition-era New York, Jimmy Walker is having a heart-to-heart with Babe Ruth about the Babe's excessive lifestyle following a disastrous, injury-ravaged, scandal-plagued season in 1925. So the story goes, the 30-year old Ruth sheepishly took the scolding and admitted he was letting down his team, the city and his fans and vowed to do better. Committing to a stricter exercise and diet regimen, the Babe would go on to help the Yankees retake the pennant in '26 before, along with a young Lou Gehrig, dominating the game in 1927 with a season for the ages. Walker, in turn, would be forced from office by scandal in 1932 and replaced by legendary reformer, Fiorello LaGuardia. The disgraced ex-mayor, facing prosecution, fled to England with his showgirl mistress and spent most of his remaining years in exile.
