More about Priestess of Painlessness

Priestess of Painlessness
She is the only caller to cross my threshold with any regularity. The Priestess of Painlessness, so misunderstood for her expressionless veneer, but I know better. She radiates a warmth that reminds me of summers from a life that used to be. She holds my hand, and the incessant bone-deep chill dissipates, baptized by an embracing warmth and I feel life under my skin.
When she wipes my tears, it is with tenderness, a knowingness. I feel seen, known, heard and understood, without so much as a syllable escaping my lips. She looks at me with an acceptance that has eluded me. A lifetime of its pursuit has wrought weariness at a cellular level, even the atoms in the perimeter of my airspace have weakened nucleuses. I sigh with an unclenching, not even realizing I’d been bound by bands of tension, head to toe.

Suddenly I awaken, alone & confused. Was I dreaming? What's real, not an illusion? Does this priestess exist only in dreams? I realize my hands are still warm. I sense pulsing in my veins. A lingering presence of love. Is that love? Or am I confusing painlessness & numbness for love.
Less pain doesn’t mean painless.
Sometimes, for some people, numbness is the only accessible option, and the Priestess of Painlessness keeps showing up, until she ushers the person to a pain-free realm. Angel of Mercy? Angel of death?

In a world that lacks empathy, but overflows with judgment and shame. Mercy is relative.

For a friend I wish I still had, and those whose value has been deemed negotiable.
Society is conditioned to require the most vulnerable to prove they aren't subhuman, to automatically assume ‘those people’ must be at fault, and to avoid asking how society failed them.

We fail the majority of them. We fail them far beyond any fault of their own. We simply have the luxury to distract ourselves, to avoid pondering the real questions. Our default is no-fault. Myself included.
