Herod Antipas had a reverence for John the Baptist and maybe even a little fear. After all, John was seen by the people, and even the tetrarch, as a prophet. Nevertheless, Herod's wife Herodias was cunning and able to manipulate Herod into having John beheaded. John had been vocal about the sinful union of these two, who both left their spouses and to commit adultery. His preaching against this act and the call to repentance would result in his execution.
