Once prized by those who could afford them, these units were quickly replaced by more advanced systems (q.v.), making these "Basics" affordable and accessible to the merely prosperous. The major drawback to this kind of unit was that it predates brain preservation technology, so that the user would still eventually suffer natural deterioration neurologically. Nonetheless, it was a tempting proposition for people with terminal illnesses, particularly younger people.
