surface were the entirety of existence. Oceans were crossed, continents charted, the
poles reached and mapped. Each generation extended the boundary of the known a
little farther outward. Yet above every voyage and every discovery remained the
same silent barrier: the vastness beyond the atmosphere, present in every night sky
yet functionally unreachable.

It was easy, for a long time, to mistake that boundary for permanence.

The early centuries of technological progress did little to challenge the assumption.
Machines became faster, instruments more precise, knowledge deeper. Yet the
scale of the universe remained so immense that even the boldest proposals seemed
to belong to speculation rather than practice. The cosmos was studied, modeled,
and admired—but rarely treated as territory in any meaningful sense.
