ArtistPhotorealistic aerial image of the Wisconsin Glacier covering the northern half of Manhattan Island 20,000 years ago, ice floes and icebergs, crisp white, ice blue, cyan, royal blue
An imagined aerial view (over the East River looking south) of the five boroughs of New York emerging from the last ice age. Manhattan on the right is all snow and tundra. Brooklyn and Queens on the left are still under hundreds of feet of ice from the Wisconsin Glacier. In the background lower New York Bay is choked with ice bergs the size of skyscrapers. It would be millennia yet before Native Americans settled the region. This was a landscape no one ever saw.
