As children, many of us have chased butterflies, running through fields with reckless abandon, trying to catch the delicate creatures with their colorful wings. We followed our feelings, our desires, without a care in the world. But as we grow older, we begin to understand that following our feelings can lead us down dangerous paths.
The Bible warns us about following our feelings, telling us that "the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). Our emotions can be fickle, leading us to make decisions that we later regret. We may be tempted to chase after things that seem attractive or desirable in the moment, without considering the long-term consequences.
But as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard. We are called to follow Jesus, even when our feelings tell us otherwise. Jesus himself warns us about the dangers of following our own desires, saying "whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23).
Following Jesus means putting aside our own desires and submitting to his will. It means surrendering our own plans and trusting in his plan for our lives. It means seeking his guidance in all things and trusting that he knows what is best for us.
So the next time we feel tempted to chase after something that seems attractive or desirable, let us remember to turn to Jesus instead. Let us seek his guidance and trust in his plan for our lives. For in following him, we will find true joy and fulfillment, far greater than anything our own feelings could ever provide.
