Eärendil, bearing a Silmaril (rescued from the destruction at Sirion), sailed into the Undying Lands, something mortals were forbidden to do. His goal: to plead with the Valar on behalf of both Elves and Men for mercy and aid against Morgoth. His plea was accepted, leading to The War of Wrath (c. Year 545 of the First Age), which ended with Morgoth's exile outside the fabric of creation. Sauron, his lieutenant, survived and hid, later becoming the Dark Lord of the Second and Third Ages. The Silmarils were lost: One in the sky (with Eärendil), One in the sea (cast there by Maglor), One in the earth (burned Maedhros before he cast himself into a chasm). And Elros, son of Eärendil, became the first king of Númenor, the great island realm of Men gifted by the Valar. This marked the shift from Elves to Men as the central players in the unfolding history of Middle-earth.
