Illustrated in the style of the golden age of classic children's books; a very old and stylized craggy face forms a sheer cliffside by a black stone beach and the the sea in Iceland; this cliffside has become the rookery for puffins and other birds, it is covered by lush grassland at the top with a small farmstead off to the side, in the distance can be seen rock protrusions that look like fingers from an outstretched hand
Also 'jötunn', a race of powerful, primordial beings in Norse mythology, old word is most accurately translated as "devourer" or "eater".
In 849 a Viking renegade, Ingólfr Arnarson, and his family (escaping a blood feud) settled in Iceland. And within a couple of decades, the total number of initial settlers ranged between 311 and 436. They brought with them the rich folklore of the times, using it to define some elements in the dramatic volcanic landscape. According to their folklore, mountainous rock formations were created when primordial nocturnal giants, trolls and tröllkona lingered too long into the dawn and were turned to stone by the sun. I imagined a giant who became fascinated with birds, and imagined him choosing to become a safe rookery for them, so I gave him a dream.
I should add that when I read about this (Wikipedia), I learned that scholars believe 'giant' is an inaccurate translation and instead these mythic creatures 'are not always physically huge or evil. They represent chaos and nature, living in realms like Jötunheimr apart from the gods.'
