The real machine elves (MEs) are beyond form, so within their realm they can appear as anything. Here, they appear as the strange gems that the subject is wearing, while the ostensible subject of this painting is not a female ME or even any other kind of non-physical entity ; it is actually a gynemorphic thought-form, which the gemstone MEs are operating like a puppet.

But why ? The truth is, they use the thought-form to goof on the human tourists who come to their domain from Earth's many 4-D realities. The MEs see this as disrespect, with humans using drugs to trespass into the MEs' homes ( if they had something to say to a human, they would simply enter into that person's dreams ).

For the MEs, the high point of the exercise is to give the trespassers some insipid truisms to take back with them, like don't pollute or set off H-bombs, and then watch them hold onto the "truths" all the way back home. The MEs see this as a very amusing way to punish the trespassers, who often obsess over the experience, sometimes to the point of madness.

The few humans who know of this gambit call it 'doing Oz The Great And Terrible,' hence this portrait's title.
