In the gospel of Luke, Jesus tells a parable about a rich man who had a bountiful harvest and decided to tear down his barns and build larger ones to store all his grain and goods. He thought to himself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?" (Luke 12:13-21)
This parable teaches us that focusing too much on earning money and accumulating wealth can cause us to miss out on other important aspects of life. The rich man in the story had no consideration for the needs of others or the fragility of life. He was consumed with his own desires and possessions, thinking that he could take life easy and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of the resources that God has given us, but we must also recognize that there are more important things in life than money and possessions. Jesus said, "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" (Mark 8:36)
We must not be like the rich man in the parable, who was so focused on his wealth that he neglected his relationships with others and his responsibility to steward his resources wisely. Instead, we should seek to use our resources to glorify God and serve others, recognizing that true wealth is found in Christ and the eternal blessings he offers.
Let us pray for discernment and wisdom as we navigate the tensions between earning a living and investing in the things that matter most. May we strive to be generous, compassionate, and faithful stewards of all that God has given us, recognizing that our true treasure is found in him alone.
