When they arrive, Hagen suspects that the newcomer is Siegfried and recounts his story to the court: Siegfried had acquired the wondrous treasure of the late King Nibelung by killing his sons. They had quarreled over the inheritance and asked Siegfried to divide the treasure for them. However, they were still not satisfied with his division and attacked him in anger. Foreseeing this, Siegfried had demanded Balmung, the Nibelung sword, as payment in advance for dividing the treasure. With it, he had slain them and the giants in their retinue.
