During his speeches and sermons did the Buddha say if life has a meaning/purpose, that "The instinct of survival fools us into thinking that existence has a meaning.Since nihilism is anti-survival, we create meaning and purpose for life to insure survival."
----------
The Buddha’s teachings address this exact tension between the instinct to survive and the search for ultimate meaning.
He did not teach that life has an inherent, cosmic "purpose" assigned to us by a creator. Instead, he aligned closely with the idea that the survival instinct—which he called Taṇhā (craving)—fools us into a cycle of creating false meanings just to keep going. However, his final conclusion was not nihilism; he offered a third path.
Here is how the Buddha broke down survival, meaning, and existence across his sermons:
## 1. The Survival Instinct Fools Us (Taṇhā and Bhava)
The Buddha taught that the strongest force in sentient beings is the will to live and continue existing (bhava-taṇhā).
* The Illusion: This driving instinct forces the mind to construct identities, goals, and attachments to justify its own continuation.
* The Trap: We create concepts of "me," "my purpose," and permanent happiness to feel secure. The Buddha called this an illusion (moha). Because everything in the universe changes (anicca), trying to find lasting meaning in physical existence or survival is like trying to build a house on moving sand.
## 2. Is the Buddha's View Nihilism?
You noted that nihilism is anti-survival. In the Buddha’s time, a philosophy called Natthikavāda (nihilism/annihilationism) existed, which claimed that life is entirely meaningless, actions have no consequences, and everything ends at death.
The Buddha explicitly rejected nihilism. He called it an extreme and dangerous view. He argued that:
* Strict Nihilism leads to mental paralysis, despair, or immoral behavior, because "nothing matters."
* Strict Eternalism (the belief that life has a permanent, god-given purpose or soul) leads to obsessive attachment and fear of death.
## 3. The Buddha’s Alternative: The Middle Way
The Buddha bypassed both survival-driven delusions and anti-survival nihilism by offering The Middle Way.
Instead of asking, "What is the cosmic meaning of life?" the Buddha asked a practical question: "Why do we suffer, and how do we stop it?"
To the Buddha, the purpose of life is not to invent a fake meaning to ensure survival. The purpose of life is to wake up from the survival loop entirely.
* The Goal is Liberation (Nirvana): True peace is found when you stop trying to fuel the survival instinct (Taṇhā). When craving stops, the anxiety of searching for meaning disappears.
* Functional Meaning: While life has no built-in cosmic purpose, we can give it a highly effective functional purpose: using our existence as a vehicle to cultivate wisdom, kindness, and mental freedom.
## In Summary
The Buddha would agree with your premise that the instinct to survive creates attachments and illusions of meaning. However, his solution to this trap was not to collapse into nihilism. His solution was to see through the illusion clearly, train the mind, and attain Nirvana—a state of peace that exists completely outside the biological loop of survival and death.
The Buddha used a famous analogy called The Raft Simile to explain how even his own teachings are just tools for survival/crossing over, rather than things
