More about The Shape of What Remains

Before the first tree found purchase, the country stood naked under a white sun and
took the weather full in the face. Rain came down without mercy or memory. It struck
the high stone, entered every hairline weakness, froze there, widened, struck again.
Whole shelves gave way in the night. Needles split from towers. Valleys opened
where no valley had been. The mountains did not rise beautiful. They were beaten
into legibility.

Water learned every failure. It worried seams thinner than a fingernail, then returned
for ten thousand years with the patience of hunger. It dragged the soft rock out by
the throat. It hauled slopes grain by grain into the basin below. Floods shouldered
through newborn channels and tore them wider. Frost pried. Roots entered after,
delicate as thieves, and broke what the storms had missed. Nothing here was
sculpted from a distance. The world put its hands on the stone and kept them there.

Forests came late. Their seeds lodged in pockets no larger than wounds, and most
died. The survivors thickened the pockets with rot, shade, insect dust, the bodies of
birds. Soil accumulated by murder and accident. Green spread wherever the cliffs
could hold it, stopped wherever the cliffs could not. Waterfalls cut backward into the
plateaus. Lakes filled, spilled, vanished, returned deeper. A summit collapsed and
buried a forest old enough to have forgotten open sky. Another forest grew on the
burial.

A million years passed without spectacle. No witness. No anthem. Stone
surrendered in increments too small for grief and too large for appeal. The tall white
faces sharpened as the loose world left them. The basin widened. The blue water
took the color of whatever sky survived above it. Trees rounded themselves against
wind, roots gripping ledges that had already outlived species. What endured did not
earn permanence. It merely lasted long enough to be mistaken for it.

Then came the quiet age visible now: clear lake, green crowns, bright cliffs standing
in their own reflections. Serenity, the final disguise of violence. Beneath the water,
silt settles over drowned slopes. Inside the rock, rain moves through cracks no eye
can see. Roots thicken. Frost waits for night. Somewhere high above the valley, a
ledge has already separated from the mountain by the width of a breath.

It will fall.

The water will take it. Trees will enter the wound. The lake will swallow what the river
brings, then split its own banks and go looking for another depth. Towers will kneel.
Valleys will climb backward into the stone. Forests will cross the graves of forests.
By then this calm will wear another face and insist, with the same blue silence, that it
has always been there.

No hand will lift from the work.
