According to this story, the three Peverell brothers defied Death by successfully crossing a deadly and dangerous river using magic. Death was outraged because he felt cheated and he could not take the brothers for his own, so he offered to give each of them an artefact of great power. The oldest brother asked for the Elder Wand, the middle sibling requested the Resurrection Stone, and the youngest one chose the Cloak of Invisibility. These items later became known as the Deathly Hallows.
