Deep in the bush where the paperbarks grow,
A camper set up for a peaceful night’s show.
With an A-frame of branches and tarp painted green,
It looked like the coziest wilderness scene.
But "cozy" is subject to wild local laws,
When your campsite is claimed by a creature with claws!
A young little perentie, scaling the wall,
Decided this tent wasn't canvas at all.
"A wonderful sun-trap!" the lizard concurred,
Ignoring the camper who sputtered a word.
At five kilograms and a half-meter long,
He climbed up the fabric, remarkably strong.
The camper peaked out from the edge of the flap,
And froze as the goanna took a quick nap.
"I wanted a holiday out in the trees,
Not a giant monitor staring at me!"
The perentie just blinked with a prehistoric grace,
As if to say, "Mate, you are in my home space."
So if you go camping down under, take note:
Check the side of your tent for a scaly green coat!
