In the foreground lies a rutted path scattered with grain scraps, where a flock of sparrows is feeding. To the left in the background is a plowed field; to the right, beyond the path, are bushes. Through a gap in the dense bushes, the head of an orange-and-white cat lying in wait is visible. Oil on canvas.
The harvest has long since been brought in, and the fields have been plowed. Before winter sets in, the birds try to collect any scraps left behind by farmers while transporting grain to the granaries. Winter will be long, and they need to build up some fat reserves.
As winter approaches, sparrows gather in flocks—much like migratory birds—yet, in the end, they never fly away.
