An autumn scene: an asphalt path runs between two rows of horse chestnut trees. The surroundings are carpeted with golden horse chestnut leaves, with conkers lying among them. Two cats—one tabby-and-white, the other black-and-white—are running toward us along the path, rolling a small conker along the asphalt. The cats are chasing after the rolling conker. Other conkers—some husked, some still in their shells—lie scattered around the path.
Horse chestnuts have begun to fall from the trees. Once freed from their husks, the nuts roll beautifully along the asphalt path. To pass the time before lunch, the cats amuse themselves by chasing and playing with these chestnuts.
The cats are fond of them. They might not bother with a ball, but a chestnut doesn’t roll in a straight line. It isn’t perfectly round, nor is its internal structure uniform; as it rolls across a flat surface, it darts about just like a mouse.
