ArtistSunset over the desert. 16:9 full width sunset depicted in heavy gouache, with the artist having squeezed the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas and having spread it with her fingers. The last sliver of a burning sun still peeks over the horizon, spreading intense, blazing-hot yellow, orange, magenta and pink streaks through the cloudless, dry sky. At the edges and top of the full-width image, the sky is turning dark blue. The landscape is the color of rusted iron and chocolate, with large and small irregularly polygonal, oddly shaped rocks strewn over sun the arid, barren landscape. Dry creosote bushes and ocotillo are eking out an existence among the rocks. Combining nuanced, strong colors with the thick application of gouache paint, the artist perfectly captures the rugged, unforgiving landscape. The museum-quality painting has a wistful, calm quality as the desert slips into a sunless dreamstate. Atmospheric painting style with Postimpressionistic and expressive Cubist elements, influenced by the styles of artists of the American West, such as George Douglas Brewerton, Maynard Dixon, James Swinnerton, Logan Maxwell Hagege, and Mark Maggiori.
