ArtistJesus Christ dancing in the four-armed pose of Nataraja, reimagined as an Eastern Orthodox Byzantine icon. Serene bearded face, flowing brown hair, golden cruciform halo, crimson tunic and billowing ultramarine robes traced with gold. One hand holds a jeweled Gospel, another radiant divine light; the remaining hands bless and gesture downward. One leg raised, the other poised above shattered gates of Hades and broken chains. Aged gold-leaf background, egg-tempera texture, elongated sacred anatomy, intricate drapery, luminous devotional atmosphere. Vertical composition, no text.
The Jesus Boogie
Jesus came dancing through the busted gates,
four hands busy with the world.
One held a book nobody finished.
One held the light bill.
His blue coat caught on a nail.
He stopped to free it.
Even resurrection
has its little delays.
Downstairs, the devil swept up chains
and muttered about the noise.
Jesus tapped his heel.
The dead sat up,
looking for their shoes.
By morning, heaven had a crooked floor
and everybody’s mother
was asking who tracked gold
through the kitchen.
