WHAT’S THE TRICK, AND WHAT’S THE TREAT?

Holidays like Halloween are magnificent exercises in cultural propaganda, elaborate systems of psychological conditioning disguised as innocent entertainment. We begin programming children before they can distinguish imagination from reality. We dress them in costumes, feed them sugar, frighten them with imaginary monsters, and reward them for participating in the collective hallucination.

Trick or treat? The trick is that nobody tells you what the trick is. The treat is that you eventually become an adult and discover that civilization operates on much the same principle.

The peculiar mnemonic device I use to remind myself of the importance of liberation is a single, unwavering determination:

I do not want to be born again as a child.

Imagine an entire spiritual aspiration toward liberation founded not upon some grand desire to merge with cosmic consciousness, acquire supernatural powers, or spend eternity floating around in metaphysical bliss, but upon one perfectly reasonable determination:

I refuse to go through childhood again.

All that helplessness! All those adults explaining reality when they haven’t the faintest idea what reality is! The compulsory education, manufactured fears, sentimental mythology, and endless conditioning disguised as love and social responsibility.

And the worst part? Having to learn everything all over again while everyone congratulates you for becoming progressively more obedient.

Perhaps this explains my decades of studying philosophy, Sanskrit, metaphysics, consciousness, and the extraordinary machinery of existence.

I’ve been investigating the possibility of escaping the entire reproductive merry-go-round.

Not because I hate children. Quite the contrary. I remember what it was like being one.

And if liberation means anything to me, it means finally stepping outside the carnival, handing back the costume, refusing another ticket, and discovering what existence looks like when nobody is standing there telling you what you’re supposed to believe.

The trick is being born into the masquerade.

The treat is never having to put on the costume again.
